Children in La Mesa and across the World Benefit from
Multi-Cultural Night at Charley Brown Children’s Center
The hall was alive with color, guests, laughter and the tantalizing scents of good home cooking. Bright red cloths covered tables brimming with foods from 11 countries (prepared by parents) and art projects created by the young students of La Mesa’s Charley Brown Children’s Center. Display boards, also the work of the children, featured what they have learned about those countries.
It was the second annual Multi-Cultural Night, an event designed to promote awareness of and appreciation for the many cultures represented by the students and their families – and, by selling their art, to create opportunity for the youngsters to help others. Money raised this year went to Nothing but Nets, a non-profit organization which delivers life-saving bed nets to children in malaria-stricken areas – enough for eleven nets!
The Charley Brown Children’s Center, 5921 Jackson Drive, La Mesa 92142 (619.463.5126) is a community outreach program of The Table: United Church of Christ of La Mesa. Spurred by then pastor the Rev. Charley Brown, and determined to offer affordable quality childcare to their neighbors, members of the congregation joined together to build the center in 1972. It and they are still going strong.
